All About Pubic Lice
GENERAL INFORMATION
Pubic lice or ‘crabs’ have been the cause of much discomfort for the human race throughout history. They were first documented around 350 BC and have been a worldwide ‘pain in the groin’ ever since. During the sexual revolution of the 60’s, pubic lice infestation reached epidemic proportions and has maintained that status ever since. More than 5 million people per year are diagnosed with new cases of pubic lice in the USA alone. Although more prevalent amongst young men and women and late teens pubic lice have been reported among all demographics. YOU ARE NOT ALONE!!!
(Pediculosis pubis) is also commonly known as: Pubic Louse, Pubic crabs, Crabs, Crab lice, Pubic mites or genital lice.
Pubic lice are usually found in the pubic area of the groin but are also commonly found in stomach and rectum hair. They are also frequently reported in under arm hair, eyelashes, eyebrows and head hair.
REPRODUCTION
Pubic lice feed on human blood. Without human blood they will die within a day. To maintain their supply of food (blood) they attach themselves to the pubic hair shafts close to the skin. Apart from feeding their other main function is to reproduce. Female lice lay 2-3 eggs per day (attached to the hair) which take about a week to hatch. These babies (nymphs) become reproductive adults in about 15 days. This reproductive cycle makes multiplication extremely fast and difficult to control. The life span of each individual lice is about 6 weeks, but the lifespan of an infestation is infinite.
INFECTION
How do we get infected with pubic lice?
The most common form of transmission is through close human contact. This can occur through normal child parent contact or more usually through adult-adult intimate or sexual contact. Oral sex can also cause a lice infection in the chest, eyebrows, eyelashes and scalp areas.
The only other way pubic lice can be transmitted is through contact with contaminated items such as bedding, clothes and furniture (within 24hrs of that item becoming infected)
DIAGNOSIS
How do we know when we have pubic lice?
Lice bites will cause a reddish area of inflamed skin. This will be accompanied by intense itchiness in the same area. Irritation is usually more intense during the night and the host may also suffer a mild fever and general lethargy.
Pubic lice can be identified with the naked eye or with a magnifying glass. The main elements to look out for are a crab like shaped parasite, greyish in colour with six legs. The colour will be darker after feeding on blood. Eggs are smaller elongated oval shapes, once again pale grey in colour and attached to the hair strand near the base.
TRADITIONAL TREATMENTS
Just about all pubic lice remedies on the market today are extremely toxic in nature. This is because this particular parasite is extremely stubborn in nature.
The problem with chemical treatments is that the human skin was not created to deal with this sort of toxicity. The manufacturers of these treatments will continue to increase the potency of their products to make it effective knowing full well the potential harm that it can cause. They do this because they know that the ill informed customer is more focussed on current discomfort rather than potential harm. And they certainly do not make it easy for the customer to attain full understanding or awareness of what they are putting on their skin.
Our skin is basically a huge sponge which absorbs everything that we apply to it. Toxic chemicals and insecticides such as Permethrin or Benzene hexachloride or strip the hair follicles of their natural oils causing a drying out or scalding of the skin. Repeated exposure to these poisons (or doses) causes rawness in the affected area, extreme irritation and eventual hair thinning and loss.
On top of all this, the head lice parasite has built up a degree of immunity to such chemicals, which are rendering them less effective and in need of more strength, which in turn causes the customer more harm.
This is why it is far more beneficial to use a natural remedy when treating pubic lice infestations.
PREVENTION
Extra measures that you will need to take to minimise the risk of Infection or re-infection.
Pubic lice eggs can survive for up to 2 weeks on clothing and bedding or any other materials that may have come into contact with the affected area. Be sure to dry clean or wash these items in extremely hot water (125 degrees fahrenheit). As an extra precaution spray these items with the remedy mixture first and leave for 25 minutes before washing.
Other members of the house should be treated immediately if it becomes apparent that symptoms emerge. Anyone that shares your bed linen, towels etc should also be treated. This should extend to close friends as well, even though it may be difficult to tell them.
Obviously sexual partners need to be treated straight away and follow the same preventative measures.
Abstain from sexual contact for 48 hours after treatment.
Avoid intimate or sexual contact with any infected individuals.
Condoms will not prevent the spread of pubic lice!
Pubic lice may be gone from you but they will never be gone from existence so keep a remedy in the cupboard you never know when you might need it again.
